Restaurants, Bakeries, etc.

As of now, there are no Kosher restaurants in Indianapolis unless you count Great Cooks the Bakery or the Grill at the JCC. There are very few Orthodox Jews here and if anyone claims that there are Jewish restaurants, they are not actually Kosher. Make sure to look for certification if in doubt.

If enough people support the grill at the JCC, they will try to be open year round. The guy running the JCC's grill (and Chicago's kosher subway) is also looking at the possibility of opening a kosher subway at the JCC. This may be a long way away, but lets keep hoping for it.

Please note that the Breadsmith Bakery which you may find listed at other websites, HAS LOST THEIR HASHGACHA.

JCC GRILL

The JCC now has it's poolside grill up and running. It's run by the guy that is in charge of Chicago's kosher subway. It's the place to go get burgers and dogs. If people support it well enough, they hope to be open year round and not just for the summer so go and support them! You do not have to be a member of the JCC to go and enjoy a burger. You just have to sign in at the front. You also do not have to be poolside to eat, they have an indoor dining area with a window to order your food without going out. Unfortunately, the JCC building is open on Shabbat. This grill remains Kosher. Only non-Jews are allowed behind the counter on Shabbat and the kitchen is forbidden from cooking food on Shabbat.

GREAT COOKS THE BAKERY

We now (FINALLY) have a Bakery, it is a few doors down from the Baskin Robins. It is called Great Cooks the Bakery. They have Parve and Dairy Items available and of course Challah for Shabbat. Go early on Friday or order by phone to make sure you get your ordering if you plan on placing a large order. They have recently expanded to the neighboring storefront which now houses the dairy stuff. There are now a few tables and chairs available! Fresh personal size pizzas are now available for order and are made with a homemade crust and sauce. Take the family out for pizza often so they continue expanding their menu! Every time you go, beg them to start making french fries... it would be great for the kids!
Go check it out!

FANNIE MAY

The last place I would like to mention is the Fannie May inside Castleton Square Mall. This is a store that carries a large variety of chocolates. A LOT of their items are certified Kosher, either by Chicago's CRC or the OU. In the back they have a large binder that contains Kashrut information on their products. I believe that most of the truffles, etc, on display behind the glass are indeed Kosher but please inquire before buying. Most of their packaging has visible certification.
